Equatorial School of Architecture
NetZero, Super Low Carbon

The EQUATORIAL SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE (2023) is a net-zero energy, super-low embodied carbon, adaptive-reuse design that integrates high quality architectural design, sustainability, and decarbonization within the complexities of the urban equator. The design carefully repurposes two university 1970’s mid-20th century campus buildings by reworking their embodied carbon, radically changing and improving the interior and exterior spatial and performance qualities. The design surgically removes antiquated air conditioning systems while inserting dynamic social spaces, a verdant jungle, and low energy hybrid cooling system to create a dynamic, flexible, and inspirational learning environment for the education of architecture. The climate-responsive buildings, with a dramatic deep veil elevation calibrates the building to the equatorial climate that envelops more than 250,000 sq. ft. of design studio spaces, maker spaces, research centers, exhibition galleries, a 12000-sq. ft. open verandah, faculty offices, and a wide variety of public and social spaces for learning and interaction between students, faculty, and the public.

The building is designed as a pedagogical tool for the future of architectural education where everything is visible, open, and accessible to learn from and to teach from. The transformation creates a scaffolding for architectural education in Singapore and in Southeast Asia centering decarbonization, sustainability and the equatorial climate as key components for the future of architecture in our warming world.
